Periodontal (Gum) Disease

Gum disease is something we take very seriously at Moxley & Wagle Periodontics. It is the reason we encourage biannual dental appointments and professional cleanings in order to help you save your teeth. Gum disease that goes undetected can put you at risk for tooth loss, bone loss and even certain physical health diseases, such as heart disease, respiratory issues and diabetes. Because the warning signs of gum disease are often hard to spot, it is often caught in its later stages, when the damage is already done. When you work together with our staff, coordinating your home oral health care with professional care in the office, we can help you minimize your risks and keep your gums healthy.

The Warning Signs of Gum Disease

All too often, patients ignore the little signs that point towards gum disease. A small tinge of blood in the sink or slightly swollen gums is nothing to ignore, as these are the early warning signs. Other signs that can present themselves, yet typically indicate an advanced case of gingivitis or periodontitis, include bad breath, teeth that look longer, sensitive teeth and changes in the way the teeth fit together when you bite down. If any of these signs present themselves, they should be addressed right away in order to put a stop to gum disease and prevent future invasive treatments.

Gingivitis vs Periodontitis

Gingivitis is the earliest form of gum disease and is the only reversible stage of this disease. This is the reason we highly encourage regular dental cleanings. Professional cleanings are the only way to get beneath the gum line, removing the presence of plaque and tartar that have built up in areas that are unreachable with your toothbrush or even floss. With regular cleanings, we are able to eliminate it before more serious damage occurs.

If your gum disease is left to progress into periodontitis, it is not reversible and serious consequences, such as bone and tooth loss can occur. Every case of periodontitis progresses at its own rate as it is dependent on many factors, including the amount of bacteria present below the gum line. Many patients end up suffering from serious, if not life threatening diseases, as a result because of the way that the bacteria is easily transferred into the lungs and/or bloodstream. Our staff has many treatment options available to help halt the disease, but the treatments are more invasive than would have been the case had regular cleanings and exams been performed.

We can work together to help you fight the risk of gum disease. With regular at-home dental care, such as brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes at a time and flossing at least once, you can do your part in fighting against gum disease. The rest is up to us. We will help you determine the best way to prevent future risks to ensure your overall dental health.

Call us today at (316) 685-2731 to make your appointment to stop gum disease in its tracks!
